Have you been missing taiko as much as we have?

Yeah, we KNOW you have!

So … drum roll please (you’ve all been practicing your rolls every day for the past year, right? RIGHT??) …

We are THRILLED to announce that we have a new OUTDOOR Recreational Taiko Class happening this April and May at Glen Echo Park!

You can find all the info and register here! Space in this class is EXTREMELY limited (even more so than usual!), so if you want to reserve your spot, DO NOT WAIT!

[UPDATE: the class is now SOLD OUT! Thanks to everyone who registered! If you’d like to be added to the waitlist to join the class, contact School of Musical Traditions. And please stay tuned – we’ll get more classes together as soon as space and time allow!]

Please look carefully over our outdoor workshop policies so you know all the protocols we are taking for the safety and comfort of your fellow taiko players (and your instructor!).

Two outdoor intro workshops this spring!

03.15.2021 by Heather Mitchell-Buck //

Who’s ready for some taiko?

Spring is here! That means the weather is warming up, the flowers are starting to bloom, and we can enjoy those longer evenings outdoors. It also means that we’re back at Glen Echo Park, ready to hit the big drums, and we want YOU to join us! We have TWO Introductory Taiko Workshops coming up, so if you (or someone you know) has been wanting to try taiko for the first time, this is a great chance to jump in and do it!

These workshops are designed to introduce the basics of taiko technique, practice of kumidaiko (ensemble drumming), awareness of ki (energy), use of koe (voice), history and philosophy — all while having a good time! No experience necessary, but come ready for a workout!

Because space in our outdoor workshops is extremely limited, they are going to fill up quickly. So check your calendars and click on one of the buttons below to get all the info and complete your registration.

We look forward to seeing you! We have reserved a great outdoor space in the Bumper Car Pavilion at Glen Echo Park where we can play together safely. Before you register for one of these workshops, please look carefully over our outdoor workshop policies so you know all the protocols we are taking for the safety and comfort of your fellow taiko players (and your instructor!).

Our 4th Meet the Artist Virtual Concert: Ryo Shimamoto!

02.06.2021 by Heather Mitchell-Buck //

We have had A BLAST at our virtual Meet the Artist events so far this winter, featuring Yurika Chiba, David Wells and Michelle Fujii and Toru Watanabe! It has been amazing to see so many of you gathered on Zoom with these awesome artists as they have played some of their favorite pieces, shared works-in-progress, discussed their influences, answered audience questions, and more.

We are excited to announce the final event in this series featuring our CONNECT 2021 instructors! Help us keep the CONNECT spirit going until we’re all able to get together safely in person once more – join us for an evening of performance and conversation on Zoom.

These are FREE concerts, but you will need to register since there are a limited number of virtual seats available.
