Ever been handed a pair of chappa and told “play something festive”…?
Chappa are such a fun and dynamic instrument to add to your taiko toolbox but we rarely get much more instruction in playing them correctly (other than “look boisterous!”).
Learn from the talented Erika Ninoyu
This workshop features Erika Ninoyu, dynamic chappa player from Shidara and The Mark H Taiko Connection! Erika will be teaching fundamentals and exercises for increasing your chappa skills and vocabulary.
Create another layer and timbre of sound to your new pieces! Or expand on what part they already play in your current repertoire! This workshop will cover different techniques for how to achieve various sounds as well as different exercises for practicing this splashing, buzzing, ENERGIZING instrument!
B.Y.O.C.

This workshop is ‘bring-your-own-Chappa’ but we do have five loaner pairs available on a first-come, first-serve basis. (additional fee of $5).
About Erika
A musician, educator, cultural ambassador, policy advisor, systems-level leader, Erika Ninoyu’s ikigai (life mission) is to enact positive social change through inclusive policymaking and community-based action. Erika’s wadaiko (Japanese cultural drumming) training is rooted in Japan, having spent years with the world-renown professional Japanese taiko group, Shidara, that has preserved her ancestor’s 750-year-old festival, “Hanamatsuri” within the mountains of Toei, Japan.
Erika has instructed wind band, jazz band, movement, percussion, taiko, music technology, and choir for all ages and settings and performed and directed numerous groups as a classically trained percussionist, composer, and conductor. She has also founded and directed many performing groups, including Wadaiko Alaska and neoclassical world fusion group, DEFusion.
She currently performs with The Mark Rooney Taiko Connection (MHTX) throughout the DMV area.
This workshop is for ages 16 & up. Please see our registration and cancellation policies.
