This event started in 2013 as a small festival in Maryland and has grown each year, showcasing a range of different drumming styles and celebrating Japanese cultural and artistic traditions from professional, community, and Buddhist taiko groups. Last year, local hosts Miyako Taiko and Mark H Taiko brought five taiko groups from up and down the east coast to the stage for over two hours of drumming. From traditional community favorites to modern Japanese-African fusion, the groups wowed an audience that included students, families, members of the Japanese-American community, artists, and many folks experiencing taiko for the first time. In 2018 we are excited to bring an even bigger taiko event to the center of the cherry blossom action at the Tidal Basin!
We are so thrilled to be presenting our sixth annual Sakura Taiko Fest on the Tidal Basin Stage. This is an especially auspicious year to have visiting taiko players from up and down the East Coast to celebrate 50 years of taiko in North America.
