Intermediate Styles Class: Fall 2021
September 22 @ 8:00 PM – 10:00 PM EDT
Like our Rec Class, this class will focus on kumidaiko and fundamentals. But the class will move at a slightly faster pace and also focus on a more challenging style of playing.
This fall, our focus will be on Naname-uchi (“angled strike”). This style originated in festival drumming in the Tokyo region. It’s a widely popular style within the North American taiko community because it offers endless potential for creativity and expressive movement and adds entirely new dimensions to taiko performance due to its asymmetry.
In this class, our focus will be on the fundamentals and form of naname playing while learning a version of “Matsuri,” a song based on Obon rhythms and known in variation by taiko players around the world.
PREREQUISITE: Intro to Naname-uchi workshop OR previous naname experience (Not sure if this class is right for you? Just ask Mark!
