Katsugi Okedo: The Moving Drum Workshop
January 4 @ 12:00 PM - 3:00 PM$50
Learn to move
to the beat of WITH your own drum!
The okedo daiko is a tied drum with a barrel-shaped body – and it is light enough to move with you as you play! You’ll often hear this style of playing called “katsugi okedo,” meaning that the okedo is slung on a strap over the shoulder so that it can be played as you move. This style, based on Korean drumming and popularized by taiko artists like Leonard Eto and Ryutaro Kaneko, has become a favorite in the taiko community because it allows players to cover a lot of area and perform exciting rhythms on both heads of the drum.
The workshop will include an introduction to various techniques for hitting the okedo, exercises for practice, and an emphasis on how to move while drumming.
Open to anyone who has taken two full series of Mark’s Rec Class or has equivalent experience (about 6 months). No experience playing katsugi okedo is required.
Kick off 2020 with a whole weekend of taiko!
This is one of THREE awesome workshops happening this weekend! You can also join us for the Taiko Communication Workshop (Saturday, 4 January from 4:00 – 7:00pm) and the Intro to Naname Uchi Workshop (Sunday, 5 January from 1pm – 4:00pm).
We’ll also schedule some fun social time on Saturday evening so those coming in from out of town can enjoy a little extra camaraderie with their fellow taiko drummers. What a great way to celebrate the new year!
