Make your own Gomikan Taiko
July 28 @ 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM$60
Make your own practice drum to use at home!
What is a “gomikan taiko,” you may ask? Literally, it is a “trash can drum” – and quite a tradition in the North American taiko scene! Many taiko players learn on these types of drums. They are inexpensive and easy to make, they’re lightweight and portable … not to mention, they aren’t NEARLY as loud as a real taiko (and so great for practicing at home, since most of us DON’T live in a practice studio). They can be set up in different ways to help you practice a variety of styles, too!
In this workshop, you’ll not only learn how to make a gomikan taiko out of a heavy duty trash can and tape (lots and LOTS of tape!), you’ll also leave the workshop with your very own completed model! Your registration cost includes all of the necessary tools and supplies, but you’re welcome to bring your own decorative duck tape to give your gomikan taiko a bit of personal flair.
It’s been more than 4 years since we were last able to offer this workshop, so don’t miss your chance to make your very own practice drum to use in between classes!
We’ve found that most people prefer to use a larger trash can (about 28″ tall) for their gomikan taiko. But smaller ones (about 23” tall) are also available and are especially good for practicing naname uchi (with the help of a folding chair). If you’d like a smaller gomikan, just contact Mark H and he’ll be sure to have one ready and waiting for you!
Plus, don’t miss Mark’s other summer workshops!
Take one workshop for $50, or two for $90!
