Kizuna will be presenting new and re-envisioned material with special guest, Japanese flutist Nobuko Miyazaki as a part of the We Are Takoma series.
Kizuna is a DC-based taiko (Japanese drumming) trio whose members collectively bring 30+ years of diverse taiko experience to the stage. Kizuna reunites three friends who love to share taiko with each other and with audiences. As performers, they seek to embody the awesome synergy of sound and dynamic movement that distinguishes taiko as an art form, as well as the spirit of “kizuna”, the bond of friendship that is the foundation of the North American taiko community.
Nobuko Miyazaki is a flutist and shinobue (Japanese bamboo flute) player, based in New York City.? A passionate and emotive performer, Nobuko draws influence from across the world, embracing traditions and transcending them.
Nobuko has performed throughout the United States, Japan, and Europe, including high-profile events and venues such as BBC Proms in the Park, City of London Festival, Glastonbury Festival, Lincoln Center Out-Of-Doors Festival, and Carnegie Hall. Nobuko collaborates with a variety of artists, including pianist and composer Emi Inaba, Bassam Saba and the New York Arabic Orchestra, Taiko Masala, Sonny Ochiai Ensemble (classical Okinawan music), Songs of Jupiter, and Mugenkyo Taiko Drummers. As a composer, she has written works for theatre and chamber ensembles, often including traditional instruments such as the tabla, ‘oud, shinobue, and taiko.
