In the past, we’ve offered an Advanced Skills Class that helped students focus on their own individual technique and form. But after 18 months of isolation in one form or another, we thought everyone could use a bit more connection and kumidaiko instead!
So what IS this Intermediate Styles Class all about?
Like our Rec Class, this class will focus on kumidaiko and fundamentals. But the class will move at a slightly faster pace and also focus on a more challenging style of playing.
This fall: Naname-uchi!

Naname-uchi (“angled strike”) originated in festival drumming in the Tokyo region. It’s a widely popular style within the North American taiko community because it offers endless potential for creativity and expressive movement and adds entirely new dimensions to taiko performance due to its asymmetry.
In this class, our focus will be on the fundamentals and form of naname playing while learning a version of “Matsuri,” a song based on Obon rhythms and known in variation by taiko players around the world.
PREREQUISITE: Intro to Naname-uchi workshop OR previous naname experience (Not sure if this class is right for you? Just ask Mark!
