Celebrate 2019 with lots of great taiko!

11.17.2018 by Heather Mitchell-Buck //

Domo arigatou gozaimashita! ありがとうございました!

It’s almost Thanksgiving, which means it’s the perfect time to say THANK YOU to all of the wonderful folks who are part of the Mark H Taiko community!

Thank you to all of our wonderful students, to all of the amazing members of Miyako Taiko, to all of the phenomenal peeps who attended and supported CONNECT 2018, to all of the rockstar groups who played with us at our Sakura Taiko Takeover at the Tidal Basin (on a ridiculously cold day!), and to every single person who’s taken a workshop or attended a performance with us in 2018!

And what’s the very best way to express our gratitude? Well … what could possibly be better than bringing you lots of great taiko in 2019?

We’re kicking off 2019 with a weekend of FOUR awesome workshops!

Whether you’re a local or from out of town, it’s a great opportunity to hang with your fellow taiko players and jump start your practice before getting back to your regular post-holiday routine.

Saturday, January 5

Shin-En 101 Workshop (2 – 4:30pm PLUS a bonus hour from 5 – 6pm!)
Learn (or review!) the basics of this simple, dynamic song!

Shin-En Fue Workshop (4:30 – 6pm)
If you’re a fue player but don’t know the melody that is an integral part of this song, now is the time to learn!

Sunday, January 6

Advanced Shin-En Workshop (10 – 1pm)
Kick your “Shin-En” up a notch by finessing your choreography, learning new parts, & more!

Bachi Maneuvers Workshop (2 – 5pm)
Experience Mark’s most often-requested workshop & add some flair to your new year!

But wait! There’s more…

We’re ready for new (and returning!) students!

Have a friend or family member who wants to try taiko? Our next Introductory Taiko Workshop is coming up on Sunday, January 13 and our Winter Recreational Taiko Class begins on Sunday, January 27! (pssssst, remember that experiences are scientifically proven to be better gifts than things! Want to give the gift of taiko? Contact Mark H and we’ll hook you up with a sweet gift card!)

And we’re excited about our Sakura Taiko Takeover!

Join us on Sunday, March 31 among the cherry blossoms for another Sakura Taiko Takeover at the Tidal Basin: a full day of taiko performances, featuring groups from up and down the East Coast! Does your group want to participate? Stay tuned – more info coming soon on the Mark H Taiko Facebook page!

Happy Holidays … and see you in 2019!

from all of us here at Team Mark H 🙂

Support Mark H Taiko on GoFundMe!

07.07.2018 by Heather Mitchell-Buck //

All of us who have had the joy of learning or playing taiko with Mark H know that he’s always there to support his fellow taiko players: whether it’s teaching us how to grow our own taiko skills, helping our groups develop a sense of kumidaiko, introducing us to other amazing taiko teachers, or even just spending an evening hanging out as a friend

And now Mark needs our support.

Support CONNECT 2018!

Y’all, CONNECT 2018 is gonna be AMAZING. I’m lucky enough to be one of the behind-the-scenes team members and I can tell you there’s all kinds of cool stuff to look forward to. But as with every new venture, it needs a little bit of help to get off the ground. Especially because we want this to be the first of many awesome events of its type – a small taiko conference built around not only lots of great drumming but ALSO around a shared experience — a time to really connect with and get to know your fellow taiko players.

Introductory Taiko Workshop

Even if you can’t make it to CONNECT 2018, you can support us by donating to Mark’s GoFundMe. Help us ensure that we’ll be able to host a future event when you CAN join us. Also, Mark has some pretty cool “thank you” gifts on offer for those who can give a little more (hello, 1 hour private session with Mark – redeemable any time in the future!).

If you’ve got any questions, don’t hesitate to contact Mark H … and remember that there are still spots available for CONNECT 2018, so if you’re still thinking about registering, DO IT! We can’t wait to see you there!

Thanks in advance for your support, from all of us here at Team Mark H!

Cheers,
Heather

CONNECT 2018 FAQ

06.08.2018 by Heather Mitchell-Buck //

With just two months to go til CONNECT 2018, we know there are still some folks who haven’t registered yet – and this may be because you have a few lingering questions about the conference. So here are some Frequently Asked Questions (and their answers!) … Don’t see your question here? Just contact Mark H and he’ll be happy to help!

Does this really take place on a Friday & Saturday?

Yup, it does – that’s not a typo. We know this means that you might need to take an extra day off from work, but trust us, it will be WORTH IT. Your conference registration includes

  • 10 hours of taiko workshops (4 workshops @2.5 hours each)
  • Admission to our Taiko Open Mic Night
  • Presentations and discussion sessions with our instructors and other special guests
  • The opportunity to save on shipping costs for quality taiko equipment from ASANO TAIKO U.S.
  • And LOTS of great opportunities to connect, including informal lunchtime roundtable discussions and optional night owl/early bird activities
Yeah, ok, but do you offer a single-day registration if I can only come on Saturday?

Sorry, but no. CONNECT 2018 is all about a shared experience and building community. We want to be sure that everyone who registers gets to experience all the great stuff we’ve got planned. We know everyone is busy, which is why we’ve streamlined and simplified the registration process. This way, you can take all that time you saved not having to choose workshops or book a hotel room and spend it drumming instead!

If you’re a local who can’t attend the conference but you’re interested in joining us for Taiko Open Mic night, we will have a limited number of tickets available – stay tuned!

I’m curious about my housing options. Tell me more…

We know that taiko conferences can get expensive, so we’ve booked a block of rooms in the UMD dorms. We’re not only offering you the chance to relive your youth, but the cost of your registration will cover your housing for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights – that’s THREE nights for about the same price as you’d pay for a single night at a local hotel. Plus, the dorms offer plenty of extra time for taiko camaraderie! If you’d rather stay in a hotel (or you’re bring a taiko player who is under 18), we’ve also got some rooms waiting at a nearby Marriott – all the info you need to book is here.

I’m vegetarian/vegan/gluten-free/have other dietary restrictions. Can you feed me?

You bet! All of our meals will be served in UMD’s dining halls, and they’re used to handling of all kinds of dietary needs. If you have more specific concerns, don’t hesitate to contact Mark H.

CONNECT 2018 t-shirt front

Can I buy one of the super-cool CONNECT shirts even if I’m not attending the conference?

Yup, we’ll be adding them to our online shop soon – you can pre-order a shirt through early July to reserve your size for delivery in August.

Help! I’m lost!

Don’t panic! We got you covered. We have maps and addresses to help you navigate the wilds of UMD.

  • Easton Hall (a.k.a. The Dorms): 3917 Denton Service Lane, College Park, MD 20742
  • The Diner (a.k.a. The Food): 4121 Farm Dr, College Park, MD 20742.
  • The Clarice (a.k.a. The Drums): 8270 Alumni Dr, College Park, MD 20742

Random Acts of Taiko

Instagram post 2187200705110281113_1429089292 I have much to be thankful for in my life but I’m dedicating today’s appreciation and love to this beautiful, spirited warrior of a girl I have the privilege of calling my niece. Always strong, she redefines what it means to “have heart” and reminds me that life is such a precious gift. I love you ❤️
Instagram post 2184568427062372594_1429089292 In Georgia at #TallulahFalls with Kristen on a long overdue getaway. Lots of mist, lots of stairs (didn’t skip leg-day!) and the cutest baby goat named Moo! #randomactsofliving #goatsontheroof🐐 #georgiaonmymind
Instagram post 2167888250320222206_1429089292 Always great to have taiko visitors from other groups come by and give us a sense of perspective! Halloween perspective came to @miyakotaiko practice all the way from Argentina in the form of super-passionate taiko player, @marina_ruuu ! Thanks for coming by and sharing your story and enthusiasm!
Instagram post 2156666480858815148_1429089292 @nendaiko today’s (well, recent) challenge brings to mind the smallest drum I ever made which was for my niece on her 1st birthday. #smallestdrum #randomactsoftaiko #uncletaiko #taikolove
