About our styles classes
These classes help students explore, develop, and enjoy different kinds of taiko. Mark H uses guided feedback to help you understand the movement and mechanics of a given style. These classes move at a faster pace than the Rec Class and are appropriate for students looking to learn new techniques for the first time or for more established players who want to develop their form and taiko vocabulary.
FOR FALL 2026: INTERMEDIATE NANAME-UCHI!
Ready for MORE Naname??
If you took our most recent naname session, or if you’re ready to develop your naname vocabulary with fun, new rhythms and movements, this intermediate class is right for you.
Naname-uchi is an asymmetrical style of taiko that involves playing on a slanted stand. This engaging style originated in festival drumming in the Tokyo region and was formalized by the group Oedo Sukeroku. Naname has since become a staple of the North American taiko community because of its endless potential for creativity and expressive movement.
In this session, we’ll be moving on to a Naname-uchi piece that will be new to many of you! We’ll work on movement, footwork, body awareness, and more … all that flair that makes naname so FUN to watch (and of course, to PLAY)!
BACK FOR THIS FALL: EVEN MORE TAIKO!
Yes! It’s another LONGER class series!
You know how it goes … we get to the end of a class series and wish we could all just have ONE MORE CLASS together!
So yes, we’re once again EXPANDING our class series this fall to give you MORE time with the big drums! That means you get NINE class sessions, plus a celebratory Holiday Showcase (and of course a bit of practice time on that same day so we’re all ready to show off our skills). We can’t wait!

Sundays: 2:00 – 4:00 pm
September 27; October 4, 11, 18, 25; November 1, 15, 22; December 6
Plus our Holiday Showcase on Sunday, December 13!

Cost:
$300 for class series (9 sessions + celebratory performance)
Prerequisite: at least one Naname-uchi series -or- instructor’s permission. Not sure if this class is a good fit for you? Just ask Mark H and he’ll be happy to help!
