About this Class
This 8-week, intermediate level class focuses on kumidaiko and fundamentals. The Styles Class moves at a slightly faster pace than our Rec Class and also tackles a more challenging style of playing.
This Winter: The Return of Naname-Uchi
Naname-uchi (“angled strike”) originated in festival drumming in the Tokyo region. It’s a widely popular style within the North American taiko community because it offers endless potential for creativity and expressive movement and adds entirely new dimensions to taiko performance due to its asymmetry.
In this class, our focus will be on the fundamentals and form of naname playing while building on our knowledge of “Matsuri,” a song based on Obon rhythms and known in variation by taiko players around the world.
Prerequisite: Intro to Naname-uchi workshop OR previous naname experience (Not sure if this class is right for you? Just ask Mark H!
