Introductory Taiko Workshop at Glen Echo Park

10.14.2020 by Heather Mitchell-Buck //

Have fun, get a good workout,
and meet some awesome people …
all while hitting big drums with big sticks!

Sign up for Mark H Taiko’s Introductory Taiko Workshop!

Taiko is a dynamic art form based on traditional Japanese drumming practiced all over the world. This workshop is designed to introduce the basics of taiko technique, practice of kumidaiko (ensemble drumming), awareness of ki (energy), use of koe (voice), history and philosophy — all while having a good time!

No experience necessary, but come ready for a workout! This introductory taiko workshop is for ages 13 & up. Drums are provided.

Register and pay online with School of Musical Traditions!
Register Here or call (240) 690-1910

Register early — our workshops have been very popular and often fill up!

If you already have taiko experience and are looking for an additional challenge, you can also register for one of our Drills workshops (on Sunday, Oct 25 OR Saturday, Nov 7)!

This workshop (or previous taiko experience) is a prerequisite for Mark’s Recreational Taiko Classes. Although our classes are currently on hiatus, we look forward to being able to get safely back into the studio soon!

Taiko Drills 201: Outdoor Workshop

10.13.2020 by Heather Mitchell-Buck //

Join us for TAIKO DRILLS 201!

If you’ve been looking for more ways to practice taiko at home, don’t miss this fun and challenging workshop! Drills are the perfect way to keep your taiko momentum going and work on listening and learning as well as speed, coordination, ambidexterity, and bachi control – in short, all the foundational skills of excellent taiko playing!

Whether you have been practicing regularly on your own or haven’t had the time or energy to think about taiko since March, we know that EVERYONE is ready to hit a taiko. And we have found a great outdoor space at Glen Echo Park where we can play safely.

mask with drumBefore you register, please look carefully over our outdoor workshop policies so you know all the protocols we are taking for the safety and comfort of your fellow taiko players (and your instructor!).

This workshop is open to anyone who has been part of our Adult Recreational Taiko Class for at least a year or who has equivalent experience. Not sure if this workshop is right for you? Contact Mark H and he’ll help you figure it out!

This is one of THREE open taiko workshops happening this fall at Glen Echo Park. Because space is limited, we ask that everyone help us out by sharing the taiko wealth.

  • You can sign up for this workshop OR Taiko Drills 101 (on Sunday, Oct 25).
  • And if you’re looking for more taiko time, you can also register for our Introductory Taiko Workshop (on Sunday, Nov 15).

Please check out our registration & cancellation policies.

Taiko Drills 101: Outdoor Workshop

10.13.2020 by Heather Mitchell-Buck //

Join us for TAIKO DRILLS 101!

Don’t let the title fool you! In this workshop, Mark H will introduce a variety of drills to help you keep up your taiko mojo. We’ll learn simple ways to practice basic techniques as well as more challenging exercises that will test your timing, focus, and coordination. We’ll also explore drills centered on kumidaiko (playing as a group), because we know that is the main thing we’ve all been missing during COVID – the chance to connect with our fellow human beings.

Whether you have been busily practicing at home or haven’t had the time or energy to think about taiko since March, we know that EVERYONE is ready to hit a taiko. And we have found a great outdoor space at Glen Echo Park where we can play safely.
