Advanced Shin-En Workshop

11.17.2018 by Heather Mitchell-Buck //

OK, so you’ve learned the basics of “Shin-En” … now get ready to kick it up a notch!

In this workshop, you’ll learn the double drum (shime + okedo) set part for the song … AND the exciting fast break “hashiru” part … AND more advanced techniques for the chudaiko part (movement, dynamics, timing, connection to your fellow players, etc).

This workshop is open to those who took Saturday’s “Shin-En 101” workshop or those who already know the song.

Shin-En with Fue (and Special Guests!)

Kick off 2019 with a whole weekend of taiko!

This is one of FOUR awesome workshops happening this weekend at the University of Maryland! You can also join us for the Shin-En 101 Workshop (Saturday, 5 January from 2 – 4:30pm); the Shin-En Fue Workshop (Saturday, 5 January from 4:30 – 6pm); and the Bachi Maneuvers Workshop (Sunday, 6 January from 2 – 5pm). We’ll also schedule some fun social time on Saturday evening so those coming in from out of town can enjoy a little extra camaraderie with their fellow taiko drummers. What a great way to celebrate the new year!

Shin-En Fue Workshop

11.17.2018 by Heather Mitchell-Buck //

Are you a fue player who would like to add a fun, festive piece into your repertoire? Then this workshop is for you! Join guest instructor Lisa Shiota to learn the fue melody that is an integral part of “Shin-En.” We guarantee that once you hear the piece with the fue part, the song just won’t be the same without it!

The first half hour of this workshop will introduce you to the melody. (We’ll send participants the sheet music in advance of the workshop so you can start learning it beforehand.) Once you’ve learned the basics, we’ll invite the drummers back to join us so we can all practice the song together.

Please note that this is NOT an “intro to fue” workshop – participants should have some prior fue experience. Please bring your own #8 fue to the workshop (though we might have a couple of emergency fue available in a pinch – let us know if you need one). FYI: most of this piece is in the 2nd octave!

Lisa has studied shinobue with Kaoru Watanabe and has taken workshops with Marco Lienhard and Shogo Yoshii. Prior to playing taiko, she had taught private lessons on woodwind instruments for over ten years. Lisa plays on Rippei shinobue.

Shin-En 101

11.17.2018 by Terry Buck //

“Shin-En” means “a celebration of the heart.” This original, open-source piece, composed by Mark H, is a favorite among many taiko players throughout the US, Japan, and Europe. Learning “Shin-En” will not only help you to connect with your fellow workshop participants but will also give you a connection to other taiko players around the world.

This simple yet dynamic song can be learned by those who are still relatively new to taiko but also features a number of different skills that will challenge more experienced players. No matter where you are in your taiko journey, this workshop will be a ton of fun!

Planning to join us on Sunday, March 31 for the 2019 Sakura Taiko Takeover at the Tidal Basin? We’re organizing a massive “Shin-En” that will feature as many players as possible! So if you (or your group members) don’t yet know this piece, this is your chance to learn it before cherry blossom season arrives!

This workshop is open to anyone who has taken two full series of Mark’s Rec Class or has equivalent experience. BUT! if you are interested and have only been in one class series, contact Mark to see if this workshop is a good fit for you!

BONUS!
Join us for an optional extra hour of “Shin-En” practice from 5 – 6pm along with the folks who are working to learn the fue part of the song! This will gives you just enough time to take a break before jumping back in. 😉
